The sauna towel most people bring to the bench isn't made for the bench. It's a bath towel — part polyester, cut short, meant for tile floors and cool air.
We've been working on something better. Today we're launching the Halsa Waffle Sauna Towel — 100% cotton, waffle-woven, built specifically for the room where synthetics don't belong.
Why we made a sauna towel
If you sauna regularly, you already know the problems with a standard bath towel:
- Too short to lie on the bench without your skin touching hot cedar
- Blended with polyester or microfibre — synthetics that don't belong in a sauna
- Flat terry weave that stays damp between rounds
- No hang loop, so it piles up wet on the bench instead of drying between sessions
Real sauna cultures — Finnish, Estonian, Latvian, Russian — have used cotton for centuries because it's what actually works in the heat. Not polyester, not microfibre, not blends. Pure cotton, woven in a texture built for the room.
What we built
The Halsa Waffle Sauna Towel is 100% cotton in a waffle weave, 380 GSM, sized specifically for a sauna bench. Not a scaled-up hand towel, not a scaled-down bath sheet — sized for the way you actually use it in the sauna.
Here's what makes it different from what's in your linen closet:
- 100% cotton, no synthetics. Polyester and microfibre blends don't belong in a sauna. Cotton is a natural fibre that holds up in the heat — the way real sauna towels have been made for centuries.
- Waffle weave with more surface area than flat terry. The raised texture lifts you off the bench and gives the fabric room to breathe. Dries faster on the peg between sessions.
- 380 GSM density. Substantial enough to sit or lie on the bench without feeling the wood through it. Light enough to dry quickly between rounds.
- Sized for the bench. 80 × 145 cm (31.5 × 57 in) — long enough to actually lie on the bench full-length. Most bath towels stop at 140 cm.
- Finished hems on all four sides. Reinforced stitching that holds up to years of hot, wet sessions.
- Embroidered Halsa logo + built-in hang loop. Understated white embroidery on the bottom right corner, and a low-profile woven hang loop sewn directly into the hem — so the towel dries between sessions instead of piling up.
Waffle weave, and why it matters
Most bath towels are made from flat terry cloth. Terry works fine on tile floors, but in a sauna it has three problems: it stays wet longer, it's heavier to carry between the sauna and the cold plunge, and its flat surface doesn't lift you off the hot bench slats.
Waffle weave solves all three. The raised texture:
- Creates a rough grid that pulls water off your skin faster than a flat surface
- Dries faster between uses because air moves through the waffles
- Gives you a textured buffer between your body and the hot wood — you sit on the fabric, not the bench
It's the same principle behind why we make our Wool Sauna Bench Pad in dense felt rather than a flat cover. A textured surface just works better in the heat.
Works in every kind of sauna
Cotton is safe and effective in traditional Finnish saunas, infrared saunas, steam rooms, and Russian banyas. Wet or dry, on the bench or wrapped around you — it works in all of them. That's the whole point of the material.
Part of the Halsa Sauna Accessories line
The Sauna Towel joins our Wool Sauna Bench Pad as the second product in the Halsa Sauna Accessories line — a growing collection of sauna-native products built to the same standards as our hats.
The whole idea is simple: everything you bring into the sauna should be made for the sauna. Not repurposed from the bathroom, not blended with plastic for a cheaper margin. Real materials, dialled in for the room.
The full kit
Halsa's sauna philosophy is: the hat covers your head. The pad goes under you. The towel sits between you and the bench. All three are cotton or wool, all three are built for the heat, all three come from the same craft.
- Our wool sauna hats in NordicWool™ felt shield your hair and scalp from rising heat
- Our Wool Sauna Bench Pad insulates you from the hot bench slats
- The Waffle Sauna Towel absorbs sweat, dries fast, and gives you a soft cotton surface for longer sessions
