Halsa Wool Sauna Bench Pad Review: 18 Months of Use in a Wisconsin Finnish Sauna

by Halsa on Aug 28, 2026

The verdict, upfront

The Halsa Wool Sauna Bench Pad is a 100% wool felt, 10mm dense NordicWool™ sitting pad, 13.5" × 13.5", $40. It's made from the same sauna-grade wool felt as our sauna hats, sized for a single person, and it does what it needs to do: insulates you from a hot cedar bench without blocking sauna heat, wicks sweat, and lasts. It's what we use ourselves at our cottage sauna in northern Wisconsin.

This is a first-party review of a product we make. That's not a normal setup for a review page, and we want to be upfront about it. What follows is an honest walkthrough of what the pad is, who it's for, who it isn't for, and how it compares to the alternatives. We're not going to pretend to be an unbiased reviewer. We are going to be specific.

Who this is for

The Halsa Wool Sauna Bench Pad is a good fit if:

  • You sauna at 175°F or hotter, regularly
  • Your sessions run 20+ minutes and the bench gets uncomfortable in the last third
  • You use a public or shared sauna and want a personal, hygienic seat
  • You already own a Halsa sauna hat (or a hat from Rento, HUKKA, Karelian) and want the matching bench pad
  • You prefer wool over foam for reasons of safety, tradition, or longevity

Who it isn't for

Being honest: the pad is not for everyone.

  • Infrared sauna owners with a warm-but-not-hot bench. If your infrared cabinet runs at 130°F ambient and the bench isn't uncomfortable, you don't need this. A wool pad is overkill for a lukewarm bench.
  • Sauna-goers who want a full-bench cover. This is a single-person seat pad, 13.5" square. If you want to cover an entire bench top to bottom, you're looking for a different product (and we'd recommend not buying one — full-bench covers trap heat under the wood and don't dry well).
  • People who need a machine-washable pad. Real wool felt should never go in a machine. If you want the convenience of tossing your bench pad in the washer, you want a synthetic pad — and we've written honestly about the tradeoffs in wool vs foam sauna cushion.

What the pad is, specifically

Material

100% wool felt. No synthetic backing, no polyester binding, no plastic label. The felt is what we call NordicWool™ — Halsa's sauna-grade dense wool felt, the same material we use in our sauna hats. The bench pad uses a heavier weight of the same felt: 10mm dense (vs. 2mm in our everyday Bucket hat or 5mm in our premium Floral/Viking/Captain hats).

Dimensions

13.5" × 13.5" (34cm × 34cm), 10mm thick. Weight: approximately 380g (13.4 oz). Small enough to fold in half and fit in a gym bag, large enough to comfortably cover a single-person seat area on a standard sauna bench.

Construction

  • Rounded corners so the pad sits flat on typical bench slats
  • Sewn perimeter with wool-safe thread
  • Built-in hang loop for drying between sessions
  • Handcrafted in small batches

What it costs

$40, with free shipping on all U.S. orders. This is priced deliberately in the middle of the wool bench pad market — HUKKA and Rento wool pads (both Finnish) typically run $45–65 for a similar single-person size. We can price ours lower because we control our own supply chain and don't add a European import markup.

How it performs

We've been using pre-production samples of this pad at our cottage sauna in northern Wisconsin for the last 18 months. The sauna is a wood-fired Finnish setup that runs 195–205°F ambient during full sessions. Bench is cedar, roughly 6 years old.

Heat performance

The pad genuinely does what wool felt is supposed to do. On a hot cedar bench that would be uncomfortable in 15 minutes with just a towel, we can now run full 25-minute rounds without shifting or standing up early. The bench heat gets fully buffered by the wool. The sauna's ambient heat still reaches skin — you don't get the "cool spot in a hot room" effect you get with a foam cushion.

Moisture performance

Wool holds up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet, and the pad demonstrates this cleanly. Sweat gets pulled into the fiber structure over the course of a round; you don't sit in a puddle. Between rounds, hanging it on the loop dries it out substantially in the ambient heat.

Longevity

Our oldest sample is 18 months in, used ~150 sessions. It's showing minor break-in — the felt is slightly softer than day one, which is the direction you want. No compression, no odor, no visible wear. Expected 5+ years of regular use per pad.

Portability

Folds in half cleanly and fits in a standard gym bag. Light enough that it doesn't add meaningful weight. Rounded corners mean it doesn't poke through fabric or need a case.

Compared to the alternatives

Vs. a folded towel ($0)

Not close. A folded towel is fine for a few sessions but doesn't insulate meaningfully, soaks through fast, and slides around. The pad is worth the upgrade if you sauna more than twice a week.

Vs. a foam "spa" cushion ($15–25)

Cheaper up front, worse in every measurable way. Foam off-gases at sauna heat, blocks heat both directions (uneven thermoregulation), pools sweat, and degrades within 1–2 years. On a 5-year total-cost-of-ownership basis, the foam cushion is usually more expensive. See wool vs foam sauna cushion for the full breakdown.

Vs. a HUKKA or Rento wool pad ($45–65)

Same material class (100% wool felt), similar construction, comparable performance. The main differences: Halsa is Wisconsin-based (no European import chain), so ours is $40 vs. their $45–65. HUKKA and Rento have longer brand history in Finland; we're newer to the category but make the pads to the same specification. If you have a strong preference for Finnish provenance, buy HUKKA. If you'd rather buy from a U.S. maker at a better price, buy ours.

Vs. a silicone bench mat ($20–35)

Silicone doesn't off-gas the way foam does, so it's safer than foam. But silicone blocks heat both ways (same problem as foam), doesn't wick sweat, and feels plasticky against skin. Wool is a better fit for the use case.

What we'd change

Being honest: things we're still working on.

  • Color options. Right now the pad ships in our standard undyed wool color (natural cream). We're working on a dark grey and a natural brown for a spring 2027 release.
  • A larger 2-person version. The 13.5" square is right for a single-person seat pad. We're prototyping a 27" × 14" version for couples who share a bench.
  • A carrying strap. Currently the pad folds and fits in a bag but doesn't have a dedicated carry solution. Under consideration.

The bottom line

The Halsa Wool Sauna Bench Pad is a solid, well-priced, 100% wool felt seat pad that does exactly what a wool bench pad should do — insulates against hot wood without blocking sauna heat, wicks sweat, lasts. It's priced 20–35% below the comparable European options because we build it in-house.

If you're building a real sauna practice and you're at the point where a folded towel isn't cutting it anymore, this is the upgrade. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Halsa Wool Sauna Bench Pad really 100% wool?
Yes. 100% wool felt (NordicWool™), no synthetic backing, no polyester binding, no plastic label. Same material class as our sauna hat line.

What size is the Halsa Wool Sauna Bench Pad?
13.5" × 13.5" (34cm × 34cm), 10mm thick, approximately 380g. Sized as a single-person seat pad, portable enough for a gym bag.

How much does it cost?
$40 USD with free shipping on all U.S. orders. Priced roughly 20–35% below the comparable European wool bench pads (HUKKA, Rento) because we build it in-house in Wisconsin.

Does it work in an infrared sauna?
Yes. Wool felt is safe in traditional Finnish saunas, infrared saunas, and steam rooms. Note that infrared cabinets get less hot at the bench surface than Finnish saunas, so the pad is less essential comfort-wise but still useful for hygiene in shared units.

How do I care for it?
Hang dry on the built-in loop between every session. Hand wash in cool water only if genuinely needed. Never machine-wash, tumble dry, or wring. With reasonable care, the pad lasts 5+ years.
