What Kind of Towel Should You Use in a Sauna?

by Halsa Team on Sep 07, 2026

The towel you use in a sauna isn’t the same as the one hanging by your shower. Choose the wrong one and it’ll get funky fast, take forever to dry, or shed lint on a hot bench.

This guide covers what actually matters when picking a sauna towel: fabric, weave, size, and care — without the marketing filler.

Cotton, bamboo, microfibre, or linen?

Fabric is the biggest decision.

Fabric Sauna performance Verdict
100% cotton Absorbent, breathable, natural, safe with high heat Best all-purpose choice
Bamboo (bamboo viscose) Soft, decent absorbency, more delicate than cotton Fine but no advantage over cotton for sauna
Microfibre / polyester Synthetic; melts or off-gasses at high heat over time Not recommended for sauna use
Linen Fast-drying, breathable, less absorbent than cotton Great as a light wrap; less ideal for sit-on use

For most people, 100% cotton is the right answer. It handles heat, absorbs sweat, and washes cleanly. That’s why nearly every serious sauna culture — Finnish, Estonian, Russian, Japanese — has used cotton or linen for centuries.

Waffle vs. terry weave

Waffle: raised, textured weave. Lighter, breathable, dries fast, packs small. Best for sauna and gym use.

Terry: looped pile weave. Thicker, plush, more absorbent, but heavier and slower to dry. Best for bath.

Waffle is what most sauna-native towels use because the raised texture:

  • Lifts the fabric off wood slightly, so it dries faster between rounds
  • Absorbs sweat without becoming waterlogged
  • Weighs less to carry between sauna and shower
  • Packs down small in a gym bag

Terry towels — the kind you probably have at home — work in a pinch, but they’re heavy when damp and take a long time to dry between sessions. If you sauna regularly, a waffle towel earns its keep.

What size do you need?

Sauna towels come in a wider range of sizes than bath towels. Here’s a rough sizing guide:

  • Sit towel: ~50 × 70 cm — small, folded, sit-only use
  • Body wrap / sauna towel: ~80 × 145 cm — wraps around the body, covers a bench section, dries you off
  • Sauna sheet / kylpylakana: 90 × 180 cm+ — covers a whole bench or wraps a taller adult fully

The Halsa Cotton Sauna Towel is 80 × 145 cm (~31.5 × 57 in) — the standard body-wrap size that handles almost everything you’d use a sauna towel for.

GSM: how heavy should a sauna towel be?

GSM (grams per square metre) measures how dense the fabric is. For a waffle sauna towel:

  • Below ~300 GSM: thin, dries fast, less absorbent
  • 350–400 GSM: the sweet spot — substantial without being heavy
  • Above ~450 GSM: closer to a bath towel; heavier and slower to dry

For sauna use, 350–400 GSM waffle cotton is ideal. The Halsa waffle sauna towel is 380 GSM.

What to look for in a sauna towel

  1. 100% natural fibre — cotton, or linen for a lighter wrap
  2. Waffle weave — drier, lighter, packs down small
  3. Around 350–400 GSM — substantial without waterlogged
  4. Sized for wrapping and sitting — ~80 × 140 cm is versatile
  5. Finished hems on all four sides — survives repeated hot-wet cycles without unraveling
  6. Hanging loop — so you can hang and dry it between rounds without dumping it on the floor

How to care for a sauna towel

Cotton towels are simple to keep in good shape:

  • Wash before first use to open up the waffle weave
  • Machine wash cold with like colours
  • Tumble dry low, or line dry using the hang loop
  • Skip fabric softener — it coats the cotton and reduces absorbency over time
  • Hang between rounds in the sauna so it dries rather than staying damp

Common questions

Should I sit directly on my sauna towel?
Yes — that’s a core use case. In most public saunas, sitting directly on the wood without a towel isn’t allowed. A folded sauna towel gives you a clean, absorbent seat that’s easy to launder.

Do I need a separate towel for after the sauna?
Not necessarily. A properly sized sauna towel (like the Halsa 80 × 145 cm) works as a seat, a wrap, and a drying-off towel. Some people prefer two: one for sitting on and a second for the shower.

Is bamboo better than cotton?
No meaningful advantage for sauna use. Cotton is proven, durable, easy to launder, and handles heat well.

What about microfibre “quick-dry” towels?
Skip them for sauna. Microfibre is polyester-based, and synthetic fibres shouldn’t be exposed to high heat repeatedly. Cotton is the traditional choice for a reason.

Sauna towel vs. sauna bench pad — do I need both?
They do different things: a wool sauna seat pad is a dense insulating barrier where you sit; a cotton towel handles wrapping, drying, and covering larger areas. We wrote a full comparison in Sauna Bench Pad vs. Towel: Which Should You Sit On?
