Sauna Bench Pad vs. Towel: Which Should You Sit On?

by Halsa Team on Sep 07, 2026

If you’re getting into sauna and you already own a wool hat, the next question is what to sit on. A dedicated sauna seat pad or a proper cotton sauna towel? Do you need both?

Both are useful. They solve different problems. This is a short, honest guide to which one belongs under you, when, and why.

The short answer

A wool sauna seat pad is the best all-purpose barrier between you and a hot wooden bench. Small, dense, insulating, hygienic, portable.

A cotton sauna towel covers a larger area (bench or body), absorbs sweat, and works in wet-sauna environments where you want the fabric to breathe and dry between rounds.

If you sauna often, most people end up using both.

How they differ

Wool Sauna Seat Pad Cotton Sauna Towel
Best for Sitting Sitting, wrapping, drying, laying across a bench
Size 13.5″ × 13.5″ (34 × 34 cm) 80 × 145 cm (~31.5 × 57 in)
Material 100% wool felt 100% cotton (waffle weave)
Insulation High — wool is naturally insulating Moderate — cotton is thinner
Absorbency Moderate (wool absorbs moisture) High (waffle-weave cotton)
Dries between rounds Slower — air-dry, don’t wring Faster — hangs and dries between rounds
Portable Very (compact, dense) Very (folds smaller than a bath towel)
Traditional Finnish sauna Great Great
Infrared / dry sauna Great Great
Cleans in the washer No — hand-wash only Yes — machine wash cold

When to sit on a wool seat pad

Choose the seat pad if…

  • You use a hot cedar or spruce bench and want an insulating barrier
  • You’re at a public sauna or gym and want something compact to bring with you
  • You want a durable, single-purpose surface that stays clean between sessions
  • You share your home sauna and want personal seating for each user
  • You already own a sauna towel and want something dedicated to the bench itself

A wool sauna seat pad is the closest thing to a personal seat. It goes exactly where you’re sitting. It doesn’t slide around, it insulates well, and because wool naturally repels moisture, it stays surprisingly hygienic between uses.

When to use a sauna towel

Choose the towel if…

  • You want to cover a larger area of the bench (or the whole bench)
  • You lie down during sessions and want your whole body on fabric, not wood
  • You want something to wrap in between the sauna and cold plunge
  • You want to dry off with the same product you sat on
  • You prefer a fabric you can throw in the washer regularly

A waffle-weave cotton sauna towel is more versatile. It sits, wraps, dries, and covers a bench. The waffle texture lifts you off the wood slightly and gives the fabric room to breathe, which is why it dries faster than a plush terry towel.

Why most regular sauna-goers use both

Here’s the practical reality: they do different things.

The pad protects the specific spot you sit in. The towel handles everything else — wrapping, laying, drying, going from the sauna to the shower. If you sauna once or twice a week and value clean, sauna-native gear, owning both is neither redundant nor extravagant. It’s just a well-rounded setup.

Here’s how most Halsa customers use them together:

  1. Place the wool seat pad where you’ll be sitting
  2. Drape the sauna towel across the rest of the bench (or wear it wrapped)
  3. After the round, hang the towel on its loop to dry; leave the pad on the bench
  4. After the session, air-dry both on their built-in hang loops

What if I can only pick one?

If you only ever sit and don’t need to wrap, dry off, or cover a bench → get the wool seat pad.

If you want a single product that handles more use cases (wrap, sit, dry, layer) → get the cotton sauna towel.

Most people who go this route buy the towel first and add the pad later, when they start doing longer, more frequent sessions.

Common questions

Is a wool pad better than a towel for infrared sauna?
Both work fine in infrared saunas. Cotton is slightly better for wrapping around damp skin between infrared and shower; wool is slightly better as a direct seating barrier on a hot bench.

Won’t a wool pad make me hotter?
No. Wool insulates you from the bench — it doesn’t add heat. If anything, it makes long sessions more comfortable because you’re not sitting directly on hot wood.

Can I sit on the towel and skip the pad?
Yes, plenty of sauna cultures do exactly that. A folded towel provides a soft, absorbent seat. A pad is thicker and more insulating, but a towel-only setup is completely fine, especially in wetter sauna styles.

Do I need to buy both from the same brand?
No, but if you like the Halsa wool sauna hats, you’ll like the pad and towel — both are made to the same standard (natural fibres, no polyester filler, dense construction).
