Here's the situation nobody warns you about when you first start sauna-ing regularly: about 20 minutes into a real Finnish-style session, the bench itself becomes the limiting factor. Not the heat in the air. Not your tolerance. The wood beneath you.
You start shifting. You put a towel folded in quarters under your legs. You stand up early. And the round that was supposed to be 25 minutes ends at 18 because the bench got uncomfortable.

Why the bench gets hot
Sauna benches heat up through conduction from the surrounding air and, more importantly, from the wood's own thermal mass absorbing radiant and convective heat over the length of the session. A cedar bench sitting in 160°F ambient air will settle at 130–140°F on its surface after 30 minutes of continuous heat. A denser thermally-modified bench, or a bench in a hotter setup running 190–200°F, will hit 150–165°F.
For reference: 130°F is hot enough to cause a first-degree burn with 30+ seconds of continuous contact. 150°F causes a serious burn within 2 seconds of contact. You're not going to burn yourself sitting on it — your body is warmer than the wood at first — but the wood keeps heating up while you sit, and after 20 minutes of continuous contact through a thin layer, it becomes genuinely uncomfortable.
This is not a problem you can tough out. It's a limitation of the material.
The four solutions people actually use
In order from worst to best.
1. Do nothing (bench gets uncomfortable)
The cost isn't the bench — it's the sessions you cut short. If you're consistently getting up at 15–18 minutes because your legs are hot, you're leaving 25–40% of the physiological dose on the table. The research on sauna longevity benefits is built on 20–30 minute sessions, not 15.
2. Fold a towel and hope
What most people do first. Better than nothing. Three real problems:
- Cotton is a poor thermal insulator. A folded towel does almost nothing to the bench's conducted heat after the first 10 minutes — the towel itself heats up and starts transferring heat to you.
- Towels soak through and stay wet. You end up sitting in a soggy puddle that gets clammy fast.
- Towels slide around. You'll spend the session re-adjusting.
A folded towel is a fine emergency solution. It's not a real one.
3. Foam or "spa" cushion
The trap most people fall into next, mostly because foam cushions are the most-listed option on Amazon. The problems here are more serious:

- Foam blocks heat both ways. Dense foam turns your seat into a cool spot in a hot room, which throws off the whole thermoregulatory pattern. You end up sweating unevenly, and the pad's own surface doesn't get warm enough to feel natural.
- Foam absorbs sweat and stays wet. Open-cell foam soaks like a sponge. Closed-cell foam pools sweat on the surface. Neither is good.
- Foam degrades fast in sauna conditions. Cheap foam pads compress, get sticky, and start to smell within a year of regular use.
The upfront cost is low. The total cost is not.
4. Wool felt sitting pad

- Wicks up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet. Sweat gets pulled into the fiber structure and dries between rounds, not on your skin.
- Doesn't off-gas at any temperature you'll see in a sauna. Wool is stable well past 200°F, ignites only at 1,050°F, and self-extinguishes rather than continuing to burn.
- Naturally antibacterial. Real for shared saunas, gyms, and family use.
The only tradeoffs are upfront price (roughly 2× a foam pad) and care (hand wash only). Both are minor compared to the 5+ year lifespan and the fact that it actually works.
What to look for if you're buying one
Material: 100% wool felt
Not a wool blend. Not wool "flavored" over polyester. If the listing doesn't say "100% wool" in the first two lines, assume it isn't. The good bench pads on the market — Rento (Finnish), HUKKA (Finnish), Halsa (Wisconsin) — all use 100% wool felt.
Thickness: 8–12mm
Thinner than 8mm and you don't get meaningful insulation from the bench heat. Thicker than 12mm and it doesn't fold well for a gym bag. The sweet spot is 10mm of dense felt.
Size: 12–16 inches square

Details that matter
- Hang loop. Wool needs to air-dry between sessions. A built-in loop makes this easy.
- Rounded corners. Sits flat on typical bench slats without pointing corners.
- No polyester binding or plastic labels. Anything synthetic at sauna heat is worth avoiding — even small details.
Care and longevity
A good wool bench pad, cared for reasonably:
- Hang dry on the loop between every session
- Hand-wash in cool water only if it needs cleaning
- Never machine-wash, tumble dry, or wring — hot water and agitation will felt the wool further and shrink it
- Rotate which side is up occasionally to wear evenly

What about the sauna bench itself?
