In Finland, the sauna hat has a name: saunahattu. It's a simple felted wool hat worn in the hot room to keep the head, ears and hair more comfortable while the rest of the body takes the heat. Here's where it comes from, what makes a hat "Finnish," and how to wear one the traditional way.
Quick answer
- What it is: a Finnish sauna hat (saunahattu) is a loose-fitting hat made of wool felt, worn in a traditional hot sauna.
- Why Finns wear one: heat rises, so the head sits in the hottest air in the room. Wool is a natural insulator that also breathes and handles moisture.
- The classic shape: a soft bell or dome that covers the ears. Our Foldable Wool Sauna Hat ($20) is the traditional silhouette.
- For very hot löyly: a thicker 5mm hat like the Viking or Captain ($35).
- The rest of the Finnish kit: something to sit on (our Wool Sauna Bench Pad) and a cotton towel (our Cotton Waffle Sauna Towel).
Finland, the country of saunas
To understand the hat, start with the sauna culture behind it.
Sauna is part of everyday life in Finland. You'll find saunas in homes, apartment buildings, summer cottages and offices. Finland's official site notes that the president and prime minister both have official saunas. UNESCO describes the sauna as traditionally "a sacred space – a 'church of nature'", where people "cleanse their bodies and minds."
At the center of it all is löyly, which UNESCO calls "the spirit or steam released by casting water onto a stack of heated stones." Every ladle of water on the stove sends a wave of hot, humid air up toward the ceiling, right where your head is. That's why the hat exists.
What is a saunahattu?
The word is simple: sauna plus hattu (hat). It's usually a soft, felted wool hat with no lining and no hardware, shaped loosely enough to leave a pocket of air around the head. A Finnish sauna culture guide from Little Finland describes the sauna hat (saunahattu), or a hair towel (hiuspyyhe), as something that protects your head, neck and ears from the heat and helps keep hair from drying out.
A sauna hat isn't about looking the part. It's about letting your body enjoy the heat while your head stays comfortable enough to stay in.
Finnish hats are traditionally made of wool felt, for good reason:
- Wool insulates. Felted wool traps air, so it slows how fast heat reaches your scalp.
- Wool breathes. It absorbs moisture into the fiber, so it doesn't feel like a plastic cap.
- Wool handles heat. Natural wool holds up to repeated hot, humid sessions in a way many synthetics don't.
One honest note: a sauna hat is a comfort accessory, not protection against overheating. Listen to your body and keep sessions to what feels right. Our guide on how long to stay in a sauna covers timing.
A short history: from the smoke sauna to today
The oldest form of Finnish sauna is the savusauna, or smoke sauna. It has no chimney: smoke from the wood fire fills the room during heating and escapes through a small hole and the door. Little Finland calls it "the original and traditional sauna" and notes that about 25,000 smoke saunas are still in use in Finland.
Today most Finnish saunas are heated by wood-burning or electric stoves, called a kiuas, topped with stones. UNESCO lists electric, wood-heated, smoke and infrared saunas as all part of the culture, "with no hierarchy among them." Across all of them, the felted wool hat has stayed a familiar sight on the upper bench. Similar hats are worn in Russian banya and Baltic sauna traditions, too; see our banya hat vs sauna hat guide.
What makes a sauna hat "Finnish"?
There's no single official design, but traditional Finnish-style hats share a few traits.
| Trait | Traditional Finnish style | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Material | 100% wool felt | Insulates, breathes and handles moisture |
| Shape | Soft bell or dome; some with a brim | Leaves an air pocket around the head |
| Coverage | Down over the ears | Ears are among the first places to feel the heat |
| Fit | Loose, never tight | Comfort and airflow |
| Thickness | Varies with how hot the sauna runs | Thicker felt for hotter rooms |

The rest of the Finnish sauna kit
In a Finnish sauna you sit on the lauteet (the wooden benches), and you bring a towel. These two pieces complete the hat.
Wool Sauna Bench Pad
The upper bench is where the best löyly is, and also where the wood gets hottest. Many saunas use a small seat cover or towel for comfort and hygiene. Ours is made from the same wool felt as our hats, so you're sitting on wool instead of hot cedar.
- 100% wool felt, 10mm thick
- 13.5" × 13.5" personal seat, fits any bench
- Your own clean seat in shared or public saunas
Cotton Waffle Sauna Towel
Finnish sauna is done in rounds: heat, cool down outside or in a cold shower or lake, then back in. A cotton waffle towel is light enough to dry between rounds and big enough to wrap up in on the porch.
- 100% cotton waffle weave, 380 GSM
- 80 × 145 cm (about 31.5 × 57 in)
- Hang loop for drying between rounds
- Pre-order now, ships mid October 2026
How to use a sauna hat the Finnish way
- Shower first. A Finnish sauna begins with a wash, usually a shower, before you enter the hot room.
- Put on your hat before you go in. Pull it down over your ears. It should sit loose, not snug. Some bathers lightly dampen their hat first; others wear it dry. Try both.
- Lay down your seat. Place your bench pad or towel on the lauteet before you sit.
- Ask before you throw löyly. If others are in the sauna, it's polite to ask before you throw water on the stones.
- Cool down between rounds. Step out, cool off, rest and rehydrate. According to finland.fi, most people in Finland have at least two sessions in the hot room.
- Hang your hat to dry. Let it air dry between sessions. See our wool sauna hat care guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Finnish sauna hat called?
In Finnish, a sauna hat is called a saunahattu, from sauna plus hattu (hat). It's traditionally made of felted wool.
Why do Finns wear hats in the sauna?
Heat rises, so the head sits in the hottest air in the sauna, especially after water is thrown on the stones. A loose wool hat helps keep the head, ears and hair more comfortable so you can enjoy the heat. It's a comfort accessory, not protection against overheating.
What is a traditional Finnish sauna hat made of?
Wool felt. Wool insulates, breathes and holds up to repeated hot, humid sessions. All Halsa sauna hats are 100% wool felt.
What is the most traditional sauna hat shape?
A soft bell or dome shape that covers the ears. The Halsa Foldable Wool Sauna Hat ($20) follows this classic silhouette.
Do I need a thick sauna hat for a Finnish sauna?
Not necessarily. A 2mm wool hat works for most people at typical Finnish sauna temperatures. If you like a very hot sauna or long rounds with lots of löyly, a 5mm hat like the Viking or Captain adds more insulation. See our sauna hat thickness guide.
What else do you need for a Finnish sauna?
A towel and something to sit on. A cotton waffle sauna towel dries between rounds, and a wool bench pad gives you a comfortable seat on hot wooden benches.
Is a Finnish sauna hat the same as a banya hat?
They're close cousins. Both are felted wool hats worn in a hot, steamy room. Banya hats from the Russian tradition are often taller or more decorative. Read our banya hat vs sauna hat guide.
