One of the most common questions we get from first-time sauna hat buyers is whether a "one size fits most" hat will actually fit them. It's a fair question. Sauna hats are sold almost universally in a single size, which sounds like a hack until you're the person with an unusually large or small head trying to figure out if you'll be the exception.
The good news: wool felt has more give than almost any hat material made, and a correctly-sized sauna hat is actually supposed to sit a little loose. Below is a practical guide to sizing a sauna hat, measuring your head in under a minute, and figuring out whether the one-size design will work for you.
How Sauna Hat Sizing Works
Unlike baseball caps or beanies, sauna hats aren't meant to hug your head. They work by trapping a layer of cooler air between your scalp and the inside of the hat — that air layer is part of what insulates you from the extreme heat of the sauna. A sauna hat that's too tight doesn't insulate as well. A sauna hat that's a little loose actually performs better.
This is why essentially every wool sauna hat on the market is sold in one size. Manufacturers size them to fit the majority of adult heads with room to spare, knowing that a loose fit is the goal — not a bug.
The Standard One-Size Range
Every Halsa wool felt sauna hat fits heads measuring roughly 55–61 cm (21.5–24 inches) in circumference. In US hat sizing, that's about 6 7/8 to 7 5/8. This range covers the vast majority of adult men and women comfortably. If your head measurement falls in this band, a one-size sauna hat will fit you with a little bit of natural give.
How to Measure Your Head
You only need a tape measure (the soft fabric kind tailors use) or a piece of string and a ruler. Here's the process:
- Wrap the tape measure around your head about one finger-width above your eyebrows and ears. This is the widest part of your skull.
- Make sure the tape is parallel to the ground all the way around — not tilted up at the back or down at the front.
- Pull it snug but not tight.
- Read the measurement where the tape meets itself.
If you're using string, wrap the string around your head the same way, mark where it meets, lay it flat, and measure the marked section with a ruler.
What If Your Head Is Smaller Than 55 cm?
If your head measures under about 55 cm (21.5 inches), a standard sauna hat will likely feel loose. That's not a dealbreaker — the hat will still insulate your head — but it may slip down over your eyes when you lean forward. Two tricks for a smaller head:
- Choose the Pink Scalloped or Foldable design. These sit a little closer to the head than our bucket-style hat.
- Fold the brim inward for a snugger fit if you're wearing our Bucket Wool Sauna Hat. The wool felt holds any folded shape you give it.
What If Your Head Is Larger Than 61 cm?
If your head measures over 61 cm (24 inches), the hat will still fit, but you'll have less room at the top. Wool felt stretches, so even heads up to about 63 cm generally still work — it just won't sit as tall on your head as it would on a smaller one. If you're worried, start with our Bucket-style hat rather than the Foldable; the bucket silhouette is more forgiving for larger heads.
Are Sauna Hats One Size for Kids, Too?
No. Standard sauna hats are sized for adult heads only. If you're buying one for a child, look for a kids-specific sauna hat or choose one of the smaller-profile styles and accept that it will be quite loose. We generally don't recommend sauna use for young children under 12 regardless of hat fit, as their bodies regulate heat differently.
Why Wool Felt Stretches (and Why That Matters)
Wool felt is a unique material in that it softens and relaxes slightly with use — particularly when exposed to heat and moisture. After a few sauna sessions, a hat that felt just-right at first will become a little more forgiving. This is part of why we size our hats generously: they break in over the first several uses, and you want them to still fit comfortably after that natural relaxation.
The Short Answer
If your head measures between 55 and 61 cm, any Halsa wool sauna hat will fit you comfortably. If you're outside that range but within a couple of centimeters, it will still work — you may just need to fold the brim or choose a bucket-style silhouette. And if you're genuinely unsure, we offer free 30-day returns on every hat, so the best way to know is to try one.
